Better Wayz Handsome Devil
Set up pictures coming soon!
If you've been following along on our goat journey, you have noticed I have a particular style I am looking for in my herd- dairyness without too much refinement. Nice front ends with moderate brisket extensions and socked on udders. Where I have been lacking? Fore udder extension. I retained a buck from Winning Streak R Empire Maker and Agape's Prize Au Revoir (who has excellent extension of fore) but also needed an outcross since many of my does are children or grandchildren of Empire Maker.Â
Last fall, my friend Mel & I were scouring groups, ADGA Genetics and Facebook farm pages for does that had the total package. We kept coming back to Kathy Beck Mullins and A Better Way Farm, LLC. While I was initially thrown off by the natural pictures vs stacked pictures on Kathy's farm page, it became infinitely clear through her videos, consistent LA scores and overall production scores that we needed a buck from Kathy.Â
Now, serendipity led me off Kathy's course because Hidden Hills Dicaprio joined our herd. I did place a deposit on Swiss Beauty but was pretty sure my number was not going to come up in 2026 for a buck from Kathy since there was one on the list in front of us in addition to the fact that Kathy planned to retain a buck and a doe from that breeding. I placed this thought on the back burner and focused on my very disjointed breeding adventure in fall 2025. Hilltown Meadows Maximus left the herd because of his "adventurous"Â behavior to get to does (ie: jumping over stalls)... That left me with DiCaprio as my only breeding buck since Empire Maker was related to everyone except foundation does. Once everyone was bred, it was pretty clear I needed a buck for next season since DiCaprio would be jobless while we prove his daughters. Fast forward a few months and I was asked by an owner of one of DiCaprio's freshened daughters that if he were to ever come available, that she would purchase him immediately. After some ho-humming and consulting with Mel, we decided there were more than enough straws from collection to use DiCaprio in the future and that he could move to another herd. 10 days later, I was sitting in dead stop traffic on Route 76 outside of Philadelphia and my Jeep binged with a text from Mel- "Did you see that Kathy decided not to retain the Swiss Beauty buck but is instead keeping the doe from that breeding?"Â Elated, I messaged Kathy and hoped we weren't too late to the game. I knew I was on the wait list for 2027 but was hopeful I'd be able to bump up my spot. Finally a message came through- He was coming home to be a PA resident on Valentine's Day.Â
I'm super excited to co-own Beau with Mel at Indigo Acres Farm in Boyertown and looking forward to seeing his first kids in fall 2026!
